Dossier: The reception of Toward Perpetual Peace – Call for papers

The publication of Immanuel Kant’s Towards Perpetual Peace in 1795 is an important milestone in the history of international law and revives a debate in political philosophy between realists (balance of power) and idealists (ethics). Kant is in an intermediate position between them; moreover, on the one hand, a global State is defended, on the other hand, the establishment of any institutions to mediate conflicts is criticized. After the publication of Kant’s essay, thinkers such as Jürgen Habermas affirm that this project gained ground in concrete reality with the foundation of the League of Nations in 1919 and its refoundation as the United Nations in 1945. But after more than two hundred years since its original formulation the proposal needs conceptual revisions in important aspects. That is why ethic@ - An international Journal for Moral Philosophy is organizing a Dossier on the reception of Towards Perpetual Peace from its publication in 1795 until the present day. The history of the reception of this work by Kant is extensive and included the reviews published in journals from Kant's time by thinkers like Friedrich Schlegel, Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Schütz, Joseph Görres, Friedrich Gentz, as well as studies by contemporary thinkers such as Jürgen Habermas and Axel Honneth.
